Estonia gears up for contributing to United Nations goal on education

EdTech Estonia brings together Estonian EdTech innovators and is now focusing on achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 that aims to ensure inclusive and high quality education opportunities for all.

EdTech Estonia was founded at the end of 2020 by 28 leading Estonian EdTech companies with the support of governmental institutions: Startup Estonia and The Education and Youth Authority. ‘Establishing EdTech Estonia is a great example of collaboration between the public and the private sector,’ says Ms Annely Tank, CEO of EdTech Estonia.

She adds: ‘2020 was a demanding year for Estonian EdTech companies. Some solution providers needed to serve 1000% higher demand in a matter of days when the school lockdowns started. We have set ourselves ambitious goals for the future and are aiming to grow the Estonian EdTech sector to 1 billion euros by 2030’.

The collaboration between Estonian EdTech companies has been active over the past year. In March 2020 Estonian EdTech companies started to donate their solutions to support learners and teachers in need of distance learning tools. The initiative was globally recognized and was, furthermore, retweeted by Shakira. Many of our members and more than 50 volunteers worked tirelessly to make it possible. The solutions are available here: education-nation.99math.com

Also, Every Student Online, a movement co-founded by Chairman of the Board of EdTech Estonia Ms Maria Rahamägi enabled Estonian students to study from a distance. In the first month of distance learning 1600 devices were donated to families in need, and by the end of 2020 more than 2000 devices were provided.

Estonia is famous for its digital government services and vivid startup scene, creating a great foundation for developing the EdTech sector. Building a strong and cohesive network, increasing the number of internationally active EdTechs and bringing in more investment are just some of the key objectives for EdTech Estonia. `We can reach ambitious goals only through collaboration between the main stakeholders. It is of utmost importance that the state and the innovators share the same vision. In the end it’s all about education: enabling access to high quality learning opportunities for everyone, making the world a brighter place,’ explains Ms Tank.
